Well I think she's very lucky to have found y'all! Being diagnosed with FIV isn't necessarily a death sentence to a kitty. Many live until their older years and have happy, healthy lives for the most part, with a few adjustments. There's a cat with FIV that runs our local shelter... at least that's the way he sees it... and they just keep him separated from the other kitties.
Your vet should tell you everything he recommends to get her immune system as strong as possible. Be careful about handling other people's kitties... they could have the simplest thing that could make your kitty pretty sick.
It sounds like you've got a pretty good vet. I'm sure he'll let you know when your kitty is ready for surgery.
You'll be well loved by this girl, and I wish the best for y'all! Poor girl has been through a lot - she deserves a good home!
