» lindyflood - Flea treatment

I saw your blog on lea tratment and thought I would hsare my experience and thoughts. I had catrs growing up and alweays had fleas around. We tried the bombs, the baths and teh collars. Nothing ever worked. Then Frontline came out and after about a week te fleas were pretty much gone. Even without bombing and all that stuff. we just ahd to wait out the cycle of life. Then a coupld summers ago my beauiful standard poodle got scabies. I was so upset. Could not figure out where he could of possible gotten it but it was torture for him and just the thought kept me itching for a month! We switched to Revolution because that is actually oen of the treatments for scabies.

It turns out there was a fox in our area and they are known to carry scabies. So all my dog had to do was be in the area where the fox had been. Now all I use is Revolution for my cat and dog because it actually prevents scabies. It covers everything from fleas, mosquitos and scabies. I also only use the treatment from April to November and then give them a break for the winter.

I wonder if anyone knows what brand is safest for kittens and at what age you can apply the treatment?

Yet another good recommendation for Revolution! I am sure I will be pleased with it! We used Frontline all winter and finally got rid of them. I will never make the mistake of not using one of the top 3 again. In Tennessee, our winters are sometimes just so mild that fleas and ticks don't tend to die off. We have to use something all year round, but it's worth paying the price for the flea treatment in order to not have to pay all the extras for health care that comes with the fleas - bad skin, parasites!

From what my vet says, the only one safe enough for kittens is Frontline, and it is safe at 8 weeks. I read where a vet tech posted the other day saying that you can use a teensy bit of the Frontline spray on kittens as young as 2 weeks old... I'd most definitely want to ask my vet personally before I did that, though.

Just checked - Advantage says 8 weeks... the Revolution says "up to 5 lbs" ... I'd imagine it's 8 weeks, too.

When our litters have had fleas, I start giving them baths at 4 weeks old using baby shampoo and a couple of drops of Dawn dish detergent. It has worked well. At 6 weeks old, I used a very diluted amount of Sergeant's Gold flea shampoo for their baths - that's the best shampoo I've found for actually killing the fleas.

When I walked into my room today I found three kittens roaming..lol I knew the day would come. So we moved them into my daughters room since her bed is so high and kitten proofed. I finally got my closet back! :-) At first polly was upset with the nest being out in the open, but then we put it under Ireland's bed and she seemed to be okay with that location. We also spread out a blanket on the floor and bought a little "cat house" and scratching post for them to romp around on. along with some cat toy balls and we set up the kitty litter so they can explore that too. Now they have the run of a room...lol Oh and I fed them this morning but no one was interested...so I tried again tonite. Izzie was slopping it up again..she loves it. This time also Bear ate at the plate and was pigging out. No others were into to it but in time I am sure they will all be slopping it up. I am very pleased that Izzie is eating so well though. She will catch up to them in no time. ... and now she doesn't have to be so intimidated by yjr pthers because she has more room to get out of the away of the other kitties rough housing. She is not the rough housing type..at least not yet...lol ahh before I know it they will be leaving and I will be lonely for my little kitties!

Oh they sound so adorable! I love them when they are that age where they run sideways and try to climb your legs LOL I love playing with baby kittens more than just about anything!

Dutches gets upset when I open the kittens up to a larger area, too! LOL She's like, "How am I s'posed to keep up with them all NOW??" But she doesn't have to worry about that around here for 3 or 4 more weeks.

Right now we're just anxious for eyes to start opening happy I love when they can see me and come crawling to me.

By the way, have y'all see this picture?

Hope y'all have a great Sunday!

» ThatCrazyCatLady - kitten faces

In response to kitten faces posted by lindyflood:

Yes, there are all 3 different types. My girls range like this...

Jasmine is doll face, sometimes called Angel Face when they're SO doll like her's...
Buttercup is what I call a Traditional Doll Face, it's doll face but flat...
Lily and Dutches are Traditional Persian Faces, medium Faces, being called medi's and midi's now...
Hooch is an Extreme Face, now being called Peke Faced

All of the kittens I have now should be medium-smushy like Dutches and Lily. It doesn't show up so much now, but when they are turned to the side, you can see that if you placed a ruler on their forehead, it would touch their nose and their chin in a straight line. Their noses aren't nearly as "high" as Hooch's is, though.

It's funny that there's such a range of persian faces, isn't it! I like them all for their different qualities.

No, I never laugh! I would've NEVER known all this before a couple year's ago!

» lindyflood - cat litter

I bought this cat litter for the kittens becasue it said all natural and it was made from pine, biodegradable and good for hte environment...when I got it home and opened it...it looked like hamster food....or giant rabbit pellets...lol. Polly looked at me like I was crazy. I have have had it down for the kittens but they don't even go near it. Think I will switch to the regular old non clumping cat litter. So much for being all environmentally conscious and stuff... ever heard of it? Definitely NOT the worlds best cat litter...lol
