» ThatCrazyCatLady - Do you give your cat treats?

Hey y'all happy I just finished a blog talking about our favorite kitty treats, and I wanted to ask y'all if you give your cats treats and if so, what kind? If you don't, what are you reasons for not giving them? My cats are very picky about their treats, and I've just found some (Pounce) that they will actually eat.

But I do not give soft, chewy treats, and I only give canned food every now and again. I find that the softer stuff gives them bad breath (and unneeded calories), but giving them treats that clean their teeth makes me feel better about it.

Hope you're all having a great day!
Darlene

I do occasionally buy cat treats but ten dot buy the soft ones as I just cannot get over thinking the crunchy ones cannot be too much of a trat snice they are similar top her dry can food..lol I think if I were a cat and wanted a treat, I would want something soft and chewy..so that is what I buy.

My cat is thin and small so I do not worry too much about her weight. She also tends to be a snacker. If it were up to her she would eat 10 times a day but only about 6-8 bites per meal. She also grabs the dogs food all the time..which is dry. She drinks his water too...doesnt like hers for some reason.
I feed her kitten chow (always available to her)and wet canned about 4-6 times per day. Now that she is nursing she wants to eat 16 times per day..lol she drives me crazy with that because she is very verbal and persistent when she wants her food!

Which is the food you need to watch out for concering the urinary tract?

Have you tried temptations? I think they are crunchy outside with soft inside and I think they have a "greenies" type version which I understand is good for breath. My grandmother's cat is extremely picky and that is the only treat she will eat.

Have you seen the type of cat called the bengal cat? Very cool looking but curious about the origin. It is named that way because of it's looks or is it a descendent?

I will have to try some of the temptations - got a coupon for them LOL But as long as they are getting "some" crunchy in there, I feel like it's less junk food for them. But you're right - IS it a treat if it is crunchy just like their food? happy We tried a few soft ones, and I just couldn't find one everyone liked.

I do free feed my kitties, too. I haven't had one get "too" fat, and I give mine a mix of 1/2 Purina One with furball treatment in it and 1/2 Purina One for kittens because everyone eats together around here, and I've always got kittens of my own or a girl who's preggy. I wasn't completely satisfied with the "Purina Complete" because the protein levels were lower and it wasn't a Purina One. I'd use Purina Pro Plan, but I'm so far out here in the country that it just isn't available.

Ya know, when I bred mastiffs, they loved the greenies, but it came out in the news that they were dangerous for dogs - could cause intestinal blockages because of the cornstarch chunks and such - I haven't tried them with the cats because I knew of the danger with the dogs. I will have to research them for cats and see if there are any warnings out there. They were EXCELLENT at keeping my dog's breath cleaner smelling, though!

Hope everything's going well at your house! happy

Ya know, there are several strains of cats that have a "wild" name - some are actually hybrids of wild cats, and some are named just because of their markings. I've seen the bengals, but I haven't researched them very well. I should do that and write an article on that breed.

I "believe" they aren't hybrids, though, that they are just named bengals because of their markings... but I could be wrong happy

Check this site out - http://www.exoticbengals.com/history.htm
It looks like they ARE a hybrid, crossed with a small, wild Asian Leopard Cat!
They certainly are beautiful!

Well, from what I've read on some breeder's sites, some of these hybrids from wild cats don't even learn to use the litter box - they just pick a corner and go in it, and they are pretty heavy duty sprayers if they haven't been spayed or neutered. It sounded to me like they still have a bit of "wild" left in them. Which, of course, some folks are looking for, and lots of people who have them have screened porches or sunrooms just for these cats so that they can handle the mess they leave.

Not all of these breeds are like this, though. Some are very domestic. I think it would also depend on which level of hybrid you get... like with the goldendoodles and such, you can get F1s that are straight from the golden retriever and poodle, or other F numbers that signify that they are either an F1 bred back to a retriever or poodle or two F1s bred together... using dogs as an example because this is one I know most about.

But if you were to get a hybrid that was the offspring of a domestic cat and an Asian Leopard cat, it would be more wild, I'd imagine, than 2 of the bengals bred together. Temperament-wise, you'd have to really get to know your breeder and make sure they were responsible, ethical, and knowledgable.

Maybe someone who has a bengal will stop in and give us some info. I should email the breeder at the link above and ask her to stop by and share a bit of her expertise!
