I had a mastiff who had this problem, and my sister-in-law's German shepherd does, too. What our vet had us do was use one of those bottles of ear cleaner that you can pick up just about anywhere... spray it in there, massage the outside of the ear to smush it around in there, then wipe it out with a soft cloth. Then... any guys around, close your eyes for a minute here... put a little monostat or other yeast infection cream in there. It heals it right up after a couple of treatments!

She also stepped in some poo apparently because she had it on her back paw...so I cleaned that too. she is not so happy with me which might be why she is not following me around any more..lol

Yeah, girl kitties can get messy back there when they're close to delivering because they can't reach it to groom it, and they get so big they can't maneuver the litter box very well. It's really hard with my persians - I give them a hygiene clip (clip their butt fur LOL) before each breeding so they go through the whole thing somewhat cleaner.
Kitties
They're worth it all, though!

» ThatCrazyCatLady - My kitties over the 4th holiday...
So my sister came up and brought all my nieces and nephews earlier in the week, then the hubby's family came up for the 4th - 14 people in my tiny house... and my kitties have been loved silly by every one of them this week! LOL They run and hide when everyone first starts arriving, and by the time they leave, my kitties are sad to see them go... well, that might be stretchin' it a bit
They do sleep HARD afterwards, though! LOL
My little Lily, who won't let me hold and cuddle her for more than 2 seconds without wanting to go attack something, was cuddled up in MY seat with MY blanket... and my NIECE! hahaha I couldn't believe it - she had her all snuggled up like a baby, and Lily was just purring away and quickly falling asleep.
We had a great week - hope you all did, too, and that your kitties weren't bothered by all the fireworks and noise. Mine didn't seem to notice too much, thank goodness!
Have a great weekend!

» lindyflood - Retrictions on kitten adoption
I wanted to open up a discussion on two different topics....on accidfental litters and kitten/cat adoption.
1) I got a call from my cousin who knows my Polly just had kittens. She rents her house to a couple with young children adn they are wanting to adopt a kitten. She told me that the rescue place in that area has a policy that they do not adopt out to families with children nuder 5 years old so se asked if I would consider letting him pick one of mine. I cannot believe this would be a rule at any cat/kitten rescue. Isnt a kitten in a forever home better then a kitten with a death sentence! Not to mention if they do not trust the parents to teach their kids how to properly treat and handle a kitten then they mjust think that people with kids under 5 are just morons. How about doing some teachnig and explanations to ensure the kittens are well cared for and treated correctly by the children rather then excluding them as potential forever homes?
2) I diod not intend for my cat to get pregnant, it was accidental on my part..I want quick enough ot the spay clinic. I did carry some guilt about that. So I decided that rather then take a home away from a kitten (in the case I explained above) in a shelter that I would search myself for shelters close to him (the tentant above) and I did find one about 20 miles away that has no age restriction.
Sooo hopefully they can adopt soon and I can actually say that Polly's having a litter actually helped get a kitten out of a shelter. I also have another person who wants a/my gray kitten. I am searching for a kitten like that in local shelters so she can have it sooner and also rescue a kitty. I have more requests then I have kittens right now so I am trying to do the leg work to give the overflow to the shelters, espceially since mine won't be ready for 8 weeks.

OH what a wonderful idea you have for helping them find shelter kitties. Are you using petfinder.com at all? I can't believe the amount of cats on there!
I have seen some breeders have age restrictions on their cats, based on the breed's general temperament, but for a shelter to do it just seems like the most ridiculous thing I've heard! I personally prefer my kittens to go to homes with children when possible. I can't believe they'd risk putting a cat down rather than giving it a home with a child.
Sometimes your cats just go into heat before you expect them to, like my Poppy who is in heat for her second time, and she is only 4 months old. If my male hadn't already been separated from the girls, he could've gotten her before I knew it! You can't feel guilty because an accident happens, especially as conscientious as you are about the whole thing.
And that you're helping shelter kitties because of your own litter - what better could anyone hope for?
You've given me a good idea for an article, though - Maybe one on teaching kids proper pet care. I just think it's not only best for a kitten to have "little" friends, but cats become great caregivers to their children.
The age limit thing is just dumbfounding me! Good topic!

» lindyflood - placing a kitten
Do you have any suggestions on what gender to place in a home that already has a cat? for example if the household has a male cat would it be better to place a female cat? Or....if there is a female cat in the home would it be better to place another female rather then a male?
My grandmother has a cat but wants one of the kittens and I was wondering if there is a difference in gender when considering which kitten to give her.

Ya know, I always recommend opposite sexes, as long as everyone is spayed or neutered. Girls and boys both can be awfully strange about the same sex kitty entering their territory!
If they're younger cats, under a year old, then you could probably best go with same sex.
How cool that your grandmother will get one of your kittens, though! I think cats are wonderful companions for older people, not demanding on them like a pup can be.
