Hope your little Siamese are better soon - they're just such fun and adorable kittens! -- posted by ThatCrazyCatLady » spicedchai - Kittens with Diarrhea x5 Hi everyone, My husband and I are currently fostering 5 kittens that are approximately 7 1/2 weeks old. Each has had soft stool/diarrhea fairly consistently since their arrival (as the litter was temporarily separated, we have had two kittens for just over 3 weeks and three kittens for just over a week). During their vet visits, the kittens tested positive for roundworms and were de-wormed, received flea treatments, felv/fiv testing, and fecal testing, along with general check-ups. (The first two kittens had an appointment 11/6, and the last three has an appointment 11/16). As of Sunday night, I noticed the kittens' stools were becoming runnier. By Monday morning, the stool had become diarrhea with some blood and mucous. I brought stool samples to the vet, and no worms or parasites were found. She prescribed Purina Veterinary Diets En GastroENteric dry food, FortiFlora probiotic to add to the food, and said to stop feeding wet food. (The kittens were eating Science Diet Kitten dry food, and splitting 5.5 oz. of Science Diet Kitten wet food). The vet said we should notice a difference in about two days. The vet tech had suggested weaning the kittens over to strictly Purina En within about three days. (I have always heard a week, so I'm a bit unsure about this). Tomorrow will be the second full day, and as of tonight the stools have ranged from a more formed diarrhea (kind of like toothpaste) to a watery liquid with blood and mucous, so there hasn't been a noticable difference yet. Between my husband and I, each litter box (4 in all with non-clumping litter) have been scooped 5-6 times today. I understand the kittens have been under a lot of stress (especially this past week as the littermates were reuinted on Friday), even though they don't show it outwardly -- they all remain very playful, affectionate, and love to purr. Given their diarrhea will cease in the near future -- fingers crossed! -- here are my main two short-term problems: 1) Three of the kittens have long hair and are tracking little poop smears all over their room, as the runny stool sticks to their fur. Two are extraordinarily fastidious and wipe their paws on the baseboards near the litter boxes (I have four boxes set up so far). While I clean the kittens after litter-box use with wipes as often as possible, this just isn't possible all of the time, of course. (And the newest three aren't as fond of these 'baths.') I can tell the kittens are frustrated with this problem, as well. 2) My husband and I have to bring the kittens with us for Thanksgiving -- to our parents' 3 1/2 hours away. Our vet prescribed Benadryl to keep them calm for the car trip, and we will be keeping them at my parents in a quiet room (as dinner will be at my husband's parents). I know the trip isn't the best situation for their tummies, but we were only able to find someone to babysit our own three cats (and the vet felt the kittens would be most comfortable with us). Is there anything we can give the kittens in addition to their prescribed diet to help firm up their stools? I noticed pumpkin, pedialyte, and yogurt were recommended in other postings, but can these be added to their new diet, and if so, what amounts? I really appreciate any and all advice! Thanks, Each kitten has had fecal testing, de-worming, felv/fiv testing, and flea treatments. -- posted by spicedchai » ilevreau - Kitten with diarrhea for almost 2 months! But yes, y'all, check swanjun's posts in this discussion about everything she has tried. The Purina EN food seems to have really made a difference, possibly combined with the other measures, but improvement... http://cats.suite101.com/discussion.cfm/... From the information on their site, you'll need to at least get your vet's permission to put your kitty on this food, but I don't see any reasons a vet wouldn't okay this. For the yogurt and pumpkin, it only takes a little bit... kitties tummies are small. I'd give about 1/4 tsp of yogurt a couple to three times a day, depending on how bad the diarrhea is, and of the pumpkin, I'd try maybe 1/2 a tsp mixed in with some food. Remember to try to change their diets as little as possible and take each change slowly. I would definitely get some feliway or bach's rescue remedy for the kitty's trip to help them with stress! This will be very difficult on them with the diarrhea thrown in. If your kitties have any long hair around their bottoms, go ahead and give them a hygiene clip - shave the hair around their bottoms with an electric shaver. Don't try this alone LOL Oh, and on the pedialyte, I just add a tablespoon or so in with their drinking water or feed them a tsp at a time with a baby dropper. Hope some of this helps y'all! -- posted by ThatCrazyCatLady » chibis - my cat has diarrhea My cat has diarrhea for 3-4 weeks now. She is about 9 mnth. old. She is playfull, doesn't look sick (her nose is wet and cold). I don't see any reasons for that: she is in-home cat, no change in diet, other than last couple days I started giving her some canned food and some different dry food, to see if that will help, but it doesn't. I read yesterday that it may be a good idea to not let her eat anything for 24 hours. So we are on that "diet" now untill evening. Don't know if that can be a reason, but we have a remodeling going on now. Can't say exactly but seemingly she has diarrhea for as long or almost as long as it's going on (3-4 weeks). I have to lock her in a room alone for the whole day and maybe that makes her nervous or something. But then in the evening she is out, besides she used to be alone before too. It's just that she is limitted to one room now. Could that be a problem? And if so will it only pass when the "locking" is finished or is there something I can do now? I will try to give her yogurt tonight as was recommended here. Is Yoplait ok? Thanks for any advise. -- posted by chibis » ThatCrazyCatLady - my cat has diarrhea In response to my cat has diarrhea posted by chibis:
If she acts like she's feeling bad, gets lethargic, loses her appetite, has a dull coat, or any blood in her stool, have her checked by the vet for parasites. Hope this helps some, and good luck! -- posted by ThatCrazyCatLady » chibis - my cat has diarrhea In response to my cat has diarrhea posted by ThatCrazyCatLady:
