In response to new to newborn kittens posted by ThatCrazyCatLady:

Thanks so much for your help. Turns out it was the heat. I put the kittens back in their box and she took them back out again but after the temp dropped about 10 degrees (it was probably close to 90 in the house yesterday -- yuck!!!) she stopped taking them out. I have left the door to the box open and she's laying there nursing her babies as happy as can be, obviously, not wanting to remove the kittens.

I'm going to see if I can find a bigger box for them over this week because although they are fine for now, I think, getting a bigger space would be good. I'll introduce the other cats in several weeks although for the most part I think the other cats won't be too impressed happy

Oh I'm glad it cooled down and mommy is happier with everything! Things will go much more smoothly now!

We've had a sick kitten the past couple of days - he has a Urinary Tract Infection and is now on antibiotics. I hope he heals up. He also had some crystals in his urine, which means his pH balance is too high... we'll see how things go after a couple of days of antibiotics.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

» balihai_red - Orphan Kitten

I have an orphaned kitten I found out on my patio with the umbilical and placenta still attached. He is now 27 days old. He has had loose bowels all along and now has developed into diarhea. I am giving him electrolytes and a Pectillin diarhea med. He was bouncy and pretty stong for the extremely rough start he had in life. His little behind is very scaly even though I have kept him very clean. He has no problems as far as "going" goes. He is fading and I can't get a control over it. I have diluted his formula. I have used every diaper rash ointment I can think of. I am feeding him a little formula and a little eletrolyte every two hours.I have gotten very attached to the little guy and I am crying as I ask this question. I honestly think the outcome is inevitable. For I think I cheated Mother Nature. Some suggestions for his little behind would be appreciated. Along with some advice for mixing his formula. He is just weak and a little small for his age. Also when I found him he had an injury to his eye. I have kept oxytetracycaline Ointment in his eye all along but he has lost the eye. Other eye is open and he sees pretty good for his age. Should I mix him some sort of solid food? Could this be the problem or is Mother Nature just going to claim what is hers. Maybe he was just on a loan to me for a little while.

Oh, the poor little thing! I can imagine how hard it is to watch him fade after caring so much for him!

It does sound like he might be fading, but we can fight for him just a little while longer. Have you tried something like neosporin or an antibiotic ointment on his bottom? And you might try giving him some human baby food - I used Gerber's second stage chicken and gravy with my last kittens, and they started off really well with it! You might also let him lick a little plain yogurt off your finger a couple times a day and see if that can balance out his digestive system a bit.

I wouldn't worm him or anything until the diarrhea is under control. Definitely keep giving him the electrolytes, too!

We lost a kitten to a uti this week, and it was one of the most difficult things ever for me. My heart is with you and your little kitten, and I hope he pulls through!

It is 5:14 PM here and I can report that he is responding some. He actually started to dig a little in my hand. Walking around some a little shakey, but wanting to move around. It is a lovely warm day here and I have his carrier really close to the window for a little touch of Sunshine. I'll try the neosporin. I just want to know I have done all I can do for him. Just want him to be comfortable. Sorry to hear about your kitten, just breaks my heart! More later .....Thankx!

It is 5:45 AM and we are doing a little better. Abner licked some yogurt off my finger and really DEMANDED more. I thinned it down with a little distilled water and WOW did he eat! He was looking for the yogurt at his midnight feeding. Drank his electrolytes. Drank some formula also. But was really looking around for the yogurt. LOL He is sooo cute. I think we have improved some.....We fed him at 4:00 AM....we'll see at 6 AM if he is still better. He sure is a fighter.
Thankx for the healing thoughts....Keep them coming!!!!!!

Well we are still hanging in there. He is a little slow at this last feeding. But the diarrhea is better. The color is still not just right but at least is more solid. His little bottom is starting to clear up. My daughter told me about Johnson's 3 in 1 formula No More Rash Cream with zinc oxide. It really coats and healing is taking place. So looks like I have him for another day!

Thankz Again!
