» texjules1984 - how long does it take?

Hi,
I recently got two kittens, both about 8 weeks old. While one of them has been acting playful and healthy, the other has become very sick. He hasnt been able to hold anything down and just sleeps all the time. We took him to the vet and he got dewormed, but on the car ride home he threw up a worm. Could he have thrown up the deworm medicine too? Because it's been 5 days and he hasnt improved at all. I'm starting to get very worried, considering he's very dehidraded and still not keeping anything down. How long do worms usually take to go away. He's scheduled to go back to the vet in 3 weeks, but that seems kind of long if he remains this sick. I'm just confused and need advice. Thanks so much!

hmmmm I wouldn't normally be concerned except for the kitten throwing up a worm. I've never seen one do that, and yes, he might have thrown up the medicine, too.

In my experience, it has only ever taken a couple of days for the kitten to pass the worms after getting medicine. Then if it was a bad case, the vet might want to check the kitty again at 10 days or might just wait until their next set of shots.

I wouldn't wait to take him back to the vet if he is still dehydrated and weak though! Call first thing Monday morning and let them know the kitty is still ill.

In the meantime, it is important to get the kitten hydrated!! Maybe you can get him to eat some canned food or get a children's medicine dropper and drop water into the kitten's mouth a little at a time. If he continues to be dehydrated, you might take him to the emergency vet - dehydration can take a kitten quickly!

Also, I would probably separate the 2 kittens until I knew this one was okay.

I hope the best for your kitty! Please let us know how things go - I'll keep the little one in my prayers!

» hoosierbug - Cat Dehydration

The lady posted about her kitty having worms and was concerned because he was so dehydrated. I have had some kittys that were sick at times when I was doing rescue and my vet told me to give them pedialite that you give to babies when they are sick. It always worked for me and it is also good to give this I have been told if they are on medicine as it keeps their system more regulated.

Oh, thank you so much for the tip! I have used that on puppies and had good results from it as well!

» theduke23 - cat sick?

My cat has been lethargic since yesterday. His normally robust meow has turned to a rasp, his breathing is a little wheezy in his face and every great once in a while he coughs and spits up a little. His heart rate is normal, his breathing sounds fine when I listened to his chest and he's only sometimes warmer than normal (usually when he is sleeping all rolled up in the corner). He is still eating and drinking (not as much as usual), and the one other time I can remember this happening was a few years ago when he spent a couple of days resting then got all better. I posted a question on yahoo, but they told me all sorts of crazy stuff like he's got cancer. If I leave him alone to rest, I think he'll be okay.

If it is a longhaired cat, that might be hairballs. One of my girls used to feel all funky when she got them.

It could also be allergies or even asthma since it happened before.

Whenever mine cough, I worm them and give them a dose of hairball remedy, and the coughing normally stops. If it didn't, I'd take them in to get them checked for allergies or asthma.

Kitties can also get colds. That would normally be accompanied by runny eyes and nose, though, and those should always get checked out by a vet because upper repiratory infections are especially tough on cats.

Hope it clears up! If it didn't within a couple of days, I'd check in with the vet.

Hello! Sometimes cats do slow down a little bit as they get older and mature. If you try to get him to play, CAN he? Does he have any trouble holding his head up, or does he go limp when you pick him up?

That he's eating is a good sign. He could have some worms - have you had any fleas with him? Tape worm can especially make a kitty tired.

Also, has he gotten any worse over the 3 days, or has it been about the same?

I'll check back in here in a bit and see if I can help with your answers!
