» hoosierbug - re: spraying

I have heard many breeders say that they have more than one male, and there is not a spraying problem. When I was doing rescue and I got a male before I got a chance to get him neutered, I sometimes had this problem. What is the secret to having more than one male without this problem?

THAT is a mystery! And rare! Normally, when a male has competition, he will spray to mark his territory, and even if he has no competition, he will spray more often than not.

Not much help there, am I? happy I've just been lucky with my males not spraying, but I've only had 2 males. And often, even if they don't spray different spots in their territory, they will either spray in their litter box, or their urine will smell extremely strong.

» ThatCrazyCatLady - Solution to male cats spraying...

In response to re: spraying posted by ThatCrazyCatLady:

I was checking my stats this morning and noticed that lots of people are typing this question into search engines and finding us. So I wanted to stop by and make a comment on this topic - the best way to cut down on the possibility of male cats spraying is to have your male cat neutered before he reaches the age of sexual maturity at 6-8 months old. I normally recommend neutering at about 5 months old.

Though it's no guarantee, it is the best solution.
