Toxins Found in Wal-Mart Cat Toys

Is There a Danger to Cats or Not?

High levels of cadmium have been found in Wal-Mart cat toys. Researchers and vets argue about the level of danger to cats.

Consumer Affairs.com reports that lab tests have discovered toxins in Wal-Mart sold cat toys, including lead, chromium, and cadmium. One particular catnip toy was reported to have “a tremendous amount” of cadmium, but vets are saying there is no real danger to cats. The Forensic Toxicologist in charge of the lab said the products should be removed from the market.

The amazing thing to me is, Wal-Mart labeled the toys with a warning saying, “Potentially Toxic.” HOW potentially toxic? Cadmium can cause serious problems in the joints, kidneys, and lungs. Why would that be okay to give to my kitty?

Researchers say that the tests they ran didn’t require them to manipulate the toys in order for them to leech toxins either – all it took was the act of licking the toy. Veterinarians who say there is no cause for concern simply say that there’s no way to know how much of the toxins will be absorbed by any particular pet, so they see no need to worry.

That sounds like a cop out to me! I don’t want my cat playing with anything “potentially toxic!” I don’t want someone weighing the risks for me. If you know it is potentially toxic, don’t sell it. If you do sell me something designed for my pet and even “potentially” harmful in ANY way, what kind of company are you? One that won’t be selling me any more cat products, I know that for sure.
