On July 15th, as Pamela Escamilla prepared a crate to ship from Hawaii to California for a move, she accidentally sealed her beloved cat Spice in the package. When the box arrived, the Escamilla’s noticed there was fur inside. When they climbed in to investigate, there was Spice poking her head out at them.
A trip to the vet confirmed Spice to be in fairly good shape for a cat that had no food or water for 18 days. She was constipated, and her kidneys had shrunk a bit, but she was able to eat and hold down a little food. Of course her parents had feared the worst as they left Hawaii and asked neighbors to please call them if Spice showed up. I’ll bet they never expected her to arrive in California with their belongings.
Cats certainly are amazing creatures with an incredible will to survive. Spice’s vet says that’s just a calico’s survival instinct, which makes me think of how strong-minded my torties are. Those girls are a force to be reckoned with, and I couldn’t bear the thought of losing one of them!
Even though my cats are indoor cats, there’s always the chance one could slip out a door. So it’s best to be prepared, just in case. If you have felines in your family, make sure you read “How to Find Your Lost Cat” by Shelly Dwyer.
