Having added yet another kitten to our family has had me wondering, “How many cats is too many for most families?” Indoors at the moment, I have one male and five females, ranging from 3 months old to 3 years old. I also have three outdoor kitties. One or two kitties might not be much of a financial strain on most families, but you definitely have to budget in money to take care of nine.
I spend hours each day caring for my cats. There are litter boxes to scoop, floors to be swept so litter isn’t tracked, and vacuuming to keep the floors and furniture fur free. I have blankets for everyone, and they get washed and changed out every day. Each morning, everyone in my house gets a thorough combing, and they get their eyes washed.
I wipe down all my countertops and anywhere the kitties nap with disinfectant, and spray everything with Lysol. All food and water dishes get washed each morning, too. Then there are weekly chores like dumping and bleaching all the litter boxes, as well as bathing and drying all my furbabies.
Even if you aren’t a breeder, all of these chores still need to be done. Does the average person have that kind of time, not even thinking of the expenses, to spend dedicated to their cats? There are definitely many things to consider before you end up with a house full of kitties that you can’t properly care for.
I would love to hear from all of you on this, and I’ve started a thread on this topic in the discussion area, so please drop by and share your thoughts on how many cats are too many… or too few!
