One of the most ancient of cat breeds and 4th on the most popular breeds of cat, the Siamese is best known for its inquisitive nature.
Long before the Siamese cat appeared in English cat shows, it graced the royal families of Siam (now Thailand) with its elegance and beauty. The Siamese has had its affects on many other breeds that now carry their lovely color point markings, including the Himalayan, Balinese, Javanese, Burmese and Tonkinese. There’s just nothing more stunning than the color point markings set against contrasting fur, and their amazing blue eyes are the icing on the cake!
Today’s Siamese is a long, sleek beauty. Even the head of the Siamese is long and wedge shaped. Originally, however, the Siamese looked a bit more like a shorthaired Himalayan and had what is termed an “apple head.” Today, many breeders breed specifically for the more traditional look with a more rounded body and head, while others prefer the lithe shape of the CFA standard.
The Siamese is as well known for its personality as for its beauty. They are people-oriented cats that are fond of lots of attention. They often get a bad reputation for being temperamental, but this probably comes from their inquisitive nature and demanding personality more than anything else. If you don’t want to spend hours playing fetch or chatting with your kitty, the Siamese probably isn’t the breed for you. If you want a fabulous companion who will adore you, amuse you, and stay by your side, there couldn’t be a better cat!
Siamese cats have a unique voice and love to talk, but generally, they are a calm breed. They tend to be as chatty or as quiet as their human companions, though they each have their own individual personality traits. Siamese are very intelligent cats, which makes them a great family breed. They are tolerant of children and seem to know the difference between adults and little ones. They are also wonderful companions for the elderly and will happily spend their day in Grandma’s lap. Siamese also do well with other animals and enjoy the company of other cats.
Siamese are a healthy breed with no breed-specific illnesses. They are also easy to care for and require little grooming. Many breeders opt for a cornstarch rub rather than a bath, only bothering to give the ear hairs a little trim if needed. Too much brushing can actually damage the coat. In general, the Siamese is a carefree breed, making them even more popular with those who have a busy lifestyle.
