Instructions on how to fill out a kitten blue slip if your kitten is CFA registered, including tips on how to properly name your purebred kitten.

Kitten Blue Slip

When you purchase a kitten that is registered through the Cat Fanciers Association, you will receive a blue slip from the breeder that you fill out and mail in to the CFA along with the registration fee. You should only have to complete sections A and C. The CFA will have completed section B for you, and the breeder completes section D.

Naming Your Kitten

In Section A, you will be given the choice of two names for your kitten. Each name choice can be 35 characters long. It is important to include the second name choice, as there have been times a registration application was returned because the name choice already existed. Section C should be filled in with your own name and address.

Breeding Rights?

If you are buying the kitten for breeding purposes, a PIN must be in the red box. If the breeder does not put a PIN in the box, the cat will not be registered with breeding rights, and her litters can’t be registered.

What Cat Names Mean

When trying to decide on a name, here are some things that breeders commonly use when naming their cats. Let’s use this kitten as an example, “Jaz, Moonlight on the Grove of Cheek.”

  • The registered name can be anything you like, as long as it is less than 35 characters. She would’ve been Jasmine, Moonlight on the Grove, but it was more than 35 characters.
  • The “call name” is the name you will call your cat on a daily basis. You could call this kitten Jazzy, for example.
  • Using “of and your last name” at the end of the name is like giving your cat your last name. Breeders recognize this as a sign that you bought the cat elsewhere, as with the kitten we’re using as an example, Jazzy.
  • Using your last name or a cattery name at the beginning of the name indicates that you were the breeder of the litter. If she had been called, “Cheek’s Jaz, Moonlight on the Grove," it would have indicated that she was bred by Cheek’s cattery.

Cat Registries

There are several different cat registries that your purebred kitten might be registered with, and each has their own paperwork to fill out to register your kitten. Though the CFA, Cat Fancier’s Association, is the most popular in the United States, your kitten might be registered with:

  • TICA – The International Cat Association
  • ACFA – American Cat Fancier’s Association
  • TCA – Traditional Cat Association
  • Or in Canada, CCA – Canadian Cat Association

Have fun naming your new kitty! And remember, if you send your CFA registration in within the first 30 days, you get a small discount!
