Suggestions for What to Call a Cat or Kitten

The right name for your purrfect feline friend is most important, but the owner cannot always think what to call his or her new cat or kitten. Here are some ideas.

A good name for a cat is most important, and the cat owner often wants something more original than Cat or Puss or Fluffy. Here are some possible names which the new owner might like.

Pedigree Cat Names

Pedigree cats are rather special. Even if they are pets rather than show cats, these aristocrats deserve different sorts of names names to match their unusual and stunning looks. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Abyssinia – a majestic name, particularly for Abyssinian cats
  • Aqua – for water loving cats such as Turkish Vans
  • Burma – a classic name for Burmese cats
  • Curly – for cats such as La Perm or Selkirk RexDolly – affectionate name for female Ragdolls
  • Jade – for Oriental cats
  • Lilac – especially apt for Russian Blues, as ‘lilac’ is the name given to their colour
  • Omar – for Persian tomcats
  • Saffron – for any expensive and special cats
  • Tiffanie – for Tiffanie cats
  • Zula – for Abyssinian cats, after one of the founding cats

Famous Felines

Some cat names are famouseither becasue the cat belonged to a celebrity, or becasue it was a start of stage or sceen. This gives a great deal of scope for cat owners. Why not name one’s much-loved feline after a well known one? The following list merely gives a few examples; there are many more.

  • Bagpuss = much-loved classic TV cat
  • Custard – star of cartoon “Roobarb and Custard”
  • Garfield – well-known cartoon cat
  • Hodge – Dr Johnson’s ‘very fine cat’
  • Macavity – mystery cat from ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’
  • Pluto – from Edgar Allen Poe’s story
  • Selima – from Tomas Gray’s poem
  • Socks – President Clinton’s White House cat
  • Tobermory – from Saki’s tale of a cat with the gift of speech

Girl Cats

While many cat names are unisex, some are far more suited to a particular gender. Many female cats are most definitely girlie, so why not have special feminine names for these types of cats Here are a selection of special names for female cats.

  • Alice – after Alice in Wonderland
  • Angel Face – for beautiful cats
  • Babe – for appealing cats
  • Boadicea – for queenly cats
  • Cleopatra (Cleo) – for captivating felines
  • Ella – for musical felines
  • Flamenco – for graceful cats
  • Galadriel – for beautiful cats
  • Isadora – for graceful dancing cats
  • Nefertiti – for elegant cats
  • Zuleika – from the Arabic for ‘pretty girl’

Tom Cats

Similarly, some male cats are decidedly butch, and deserve names to match their personalities. Here is a selection of masculine cat names for the cat who is most definitely a boy.

  • Achilles – for warrior tom cats
  • Ambrose – old fashioned tom cat name
  • Bilbo – for small, courageous cats
  • Genghis – for ferocious cats

People who acquire two cats, often siblings, might like to give them names which suit a pair of cats. Often these are taken from famous pairs of people, either in real life or in the media. So here are some suggestions for those who acquire two cats together.

  • Ben and Jerry – for dairy loving cats
  • Bonnie and Clyde – for attractive killer cats
  • Jekyll and Hyde – for changeable cats
  • Lemon and Lime – for green-eyed cats
  • Rock and Roll – for party cats
  • Romulus and Remus – for tough tom cats
  • Salt and Pepper – for black and white cats
  • Tom and jerry – for rush-around cats
  • Yin and Yang – for oriental cats

A cat’s name is important, so hopefully the owner will be able to find a name he or she likes from the above lists. If not, there are many books on the subject, with numerous name suggestions.
