A breeder shares her experience with cat shampoo products on the market.
You can imagine that a breeder of Persian cats does a lot of grooming, and I do! I’m sure everyone who grooms cats on a regular basis has their preferences, so I thought I’d share mine with you. Hartz Advanced Care™ 3 in 1™ Foaming Shampoo for Cats & Kittens, $6.99 per 5.25 fl oz bottle This product contains both an insecticide and an insect growth regulator, but that’s about as far as you can go with anything good to say about it. The bottle itself doesn’t seem to work properly. Foam does come out, but it doesn’t lather well. I used almost half a bottle on two kittens and finally took the top off and used it like regular shampoo. This product also left my cat’s hair very dry, and the insecticide didn’t appear to be very effective. You can buy a good, quality shampoo for the price of this disappointing product. Zodiac Flea & Tick Shampoo, $6.49 per 12 oz bottle Zodiac is just a little better than Hartz. Its effects are not long lasting, even when used with the complete system that includes a fogger and topical preventative drops. Overall, this is a product I wouldn’t waste money on again. Sergeant’s Gold™ Flea and Tick Shampoo for Cats, $7.99 per 12 oz bottle This is my favorite flea and tick shampoo. It is quite effective and reasonably priced. Sergeant’s Gold contains both an insecticide and insect growth regular and promises to continue killing eggs for up to four weeks. I haven’t found it to keep working for that long. I wash every week, and it keeps them under control during that time. It’s got a nice scent, and it is gentle on my cat’s hair. I use this first and then shampoo again with another product. Jerob, $10.49 per 8 oz bottle Jerob has the best grooming supplies on the market. I use Mahogany Gold for my red classic tabby Persian, and he has the most fantastic coat! They carry degreasers, shampoo, cream rinses, grooming sprays and powders, deodorizers, and supplements. Everything they produce is high quality and performs to your expectations. Jerob is a show groomer’s favorite! “Human” Varieties, $2.99 - 3.99 per 13 oz bottle I am very fond of both Pantene and Garnier Fructis shampoos and conditioners. After I wash with Sergeant’s Gold, I use one of these on my Himalayans. Of the two, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine is my favorite. It doesn’t overdo on the softness, which is sometimes a problem with Pantene and makes the kitty’s hair lie too flat. Garnier leaves body in the cat’s hair, softens, and shines like nothing else! Both are excellent and very cost-effective compared to pet-specific products. I hope this helps you find a great product for your grooming needs.
