Cats are prone to certain ailments, some of which can be prevented with proper care.

As responsible as most cat owners try to be, there are certain ailments and illnesses that are common to cats. While some of these are preventable, others aren't. Knowing what to look for and how to treat the problem can be very valuable in keeping a beloved cat healthy.

Cat Illnesses Due to Fleas

Fleas are a common problem with cats, especially ones that go outdoors. Fleas can cause anemia and carry tapeworm eggs. Additionally, some cats are allergic to flea bites. Signs of an allergic reaction are itchy skin, hair loss, and skin lesions. Using a good, once a month treatment can help keep a cat free of fleas, thus avoiding the above mentioned illnesses.

Internal Parasites in Cats

Internal parasites, such as roundworms and tapeworms, are another common problem with cats. Roundworms can cause diarrhea and vomiting. Although there are no major health concerns associated with tapeworms, tapeworms can cause skin irritation around the anus. Roundworms and tapeworms can be treated with de-worming medication.

Viral Infections in Cats

The three most serious viruses a cat can contract are feline leukemia virus, (FeLV,) feline infectious peritonitis, (FIP), and feline immunodeficiency, (FIV.) Feline leukemia virus is the leading cause of cancer in cats and the #1 viral killer. It is spread by saliva and the sharing of food and litter boxes. Cats can be tested for FeLV and vaccinations are available.

Feline infectious peritonitis is usually a fatal disease that can be contracted from another cat's feces. Although not a common disease, feline infectious peritonitis can cause fluid buildup in body cavities, seizures and organ failure. There is no cure for this disease, but a cat can be vaccinated to prevent FIP.

Feline immunodeficiency virus is similar to the HIV virus in humans. It breaks down a cat's immune system allowing the cat to develop infections. This disease is usually transmitted through bite wounds. Treatments are available, but there is no cure. Cats usually perish due to the secondary infections.

Cats and Ear Mites

A familiar ailment in cats are ear mites. Excessive scratching and shaking of the head are signs of this parasite. Ear mites spread quickly and can easily infect other cats in the household. They appear as small, dark specks in the ear canal, although they can be located in other areas of the body. If untreated with medication, damage to the eardrum can occur.

Bronchial Disease in Cats

Chronic bronchitis and asthma are pretty common respiratory problems with cats. Symptoms include coughing and difficulty in breathing. The exact cause for these diseases is unknown. Proper medical treatment can aid in controlling the cough and difficulties in breathing, although there is no cure for chronic asthma in cats.

Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats

Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common ailments in older cats. Symptoms include a large increase in water consumption and increased urination. Medication can help slow the disease. Feeding a cat a diet that is lower in protein and providing lots of fresh water can be helpful.

Sadly, even with proper medical care, cats can contract many common ailments and diseases. Whenever a cat shows signs of illness, it's best to get the cat to a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible. Following proper medical treatment can greatly increase the quality of the cat's life.
