A study in The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science 2002 examined adoption rates over nine months in a California pound.

The study found that black cats were approximately 66% less likely to be adopted than white cats.

Cat Lore

Some people still believe black cats to be bad luck. According to Austinlostpets.com, black cat lore dates back to the days of King Charles l of England. He loved his black cat so much he had his guards watch over it 24 hours a day. The day after the kitty died the king was arrested. Bad luck rumors began to circulate.

During the Middle Ages the black cat became associated with witches. This is believed to have been started largely because cats are nocturnal and their eyes tend to reflect or "glow" at nighttime. The black cat's natural ability to blend in at night, and "disappear" in darkness; led to rumors of bad luck befalling individuals who crossed these dark felines' paths. These rumors became rampant and many cats were burned at the stake along with their owners accused of witchcraft.

In an interview with Suite101 reporter Lynsie Slachetka, Betsy Keegan talked about her experiences as a black cat owner: Reporter’s question: "Do you feel like you have ever had bad luck because you live with a black cat?”

“No, I've never felt that ever (laughs)... I like how cuddly she is with me and I think I like that she is kind of only a me cat, because she is scared of everyone else. She is kind of like my best friend at times. I look forward to coming home to her." replied Keegan.

Adopt a Black Cat

Make a black cat lucky and bring one home. Making the transition from the shelter can be challenging. Cats do not like to travel so having a proper crate or carrier will make the trip home go smoother. Select a small quiet room to introduce the feline into and be sure to place it in the litter box a few times.

When the cat seems comfortable, introduce a toy or blanket of any other pets in the household, let it smell it out. This allows the cat to become comfortable with the scent of the other animal. Give it plenty of time, even a day or so, before introducing it to more space or pets.

Proceed slowly and with lots of treats, rewarding good behaviors like allowing humane interaction, or interacting with other household pets this will help the cat make a good transition into your home. Help a black cat beat the odds and get adopted.
