While some cats are aloof, certain breeds are quite social and do very well with families.

Choosing a new cat or kitten can be very exciting, especially if children are involved. There are certain breeds of cats that do better with children than other breeds. The following are some cats that do particularly well with kids and make welcome additions to the family.

American Shorthair a Great Family Cat

The American Shorthair is an easy-going, intelligent cat that does well with children and other animals. This vigorous cat can be playful and enjoys cuddling up to people, although it isn't a lap cat. American Shorthairs are medium to large sized cats that can be quite athletic.

A Cat Good with Kids: the Ragdoll

Ragdolls are very sweet cats with docile temperaments. With their gentle disposition, they're especially good with children and other pets. A Ragdoll is open to training when rewards are at stake. Quite social, a Ragdoll is a great cat for apartment living. As its coat is not prone to matting, a Ragdoll only needs combing or brushing once or twice a week. They are born white and gradually develop color and pattern.

Bombay is a Playful Cat

Outgoing and curious, Bombays are very affectionate and love to curl up on people's laps. They like to play and are good at playing fetch. Bombays get along with dogs and other cats, although in a multi-cat home, they tend to dominate. These intelligent, soft voiced felines make great companions for children.

A Child Friendly Cat - the American Curl

The American Curl is a people oriented lap cat. This sweet cat comes in both long and short coats. A newer breed of cat, American Curls are friendly and affectionate and enjoy being around children. Although they are born with straight ears, when they are 2 - 10 days old, their ears begin to curl until they are set at about four months. American Curls are even-tempered and get along with other pets in the house.

Burmese: a Very Affectionate Cat

Burmese are one of the most affectionate breeds of cats that crave attention and praise. They love to cuddle and are the perfect lap cat. Good with children, Burmese are friendly with both family members and strangers, as well as other animals. These intelligent, inquisitive cats love to go for car rides. Burmese are easily adaptable and can live just about anywhere.

A Great Family Cat, the Japanese Bobtail

Seen as a good luck symbol in Japan, the Japanese Bobtail is one of the happiest breeds of cats. They attach themselves to every member of the family and are terrific with children. Japanese Bobtails are curious, intelligent, and playful. These affectionate lap cats are quite lively and enjoy water play and carrying objects around in their mouths.

One of the Best Family Breeds of Cats is the Snowshoe

Talkative, with a soft voice, Snowshoes are good natured cats that make loving companions. Known for its white markings on the paws, Snowshoes are easy-going cats that get along well with children and other pets. These active cats are very affectionate and are considered to be a lap cat. Because it's so people oriented, Snowshoes do best in a home where people are always around.

Even though certain breeds of cats are more family oriented, there are lots of mixed breed cats that are great with children and make wonderful family pets. When looking for a kitten or cat, don't forget to consider adopting one from a local animal shelter or feline rescue group.
