Ninth on the list of most popular feline breeds, the American Shorthair is sure to win your heart with their sweet expression and complete devotion!
The American Shorthair is the original American cat, having arrived on the Mayflower with the Pilgrims. Originally prized for their hunting skills, this breed is now very well known for their beauty and companionship. The American Shorthair is listed in the very first show records, and they became an official CFA breed in 1906.
It is important to note that the American Shorthair is a completely different cat from what we refer to as the Domestic Shorthair, which is not a purebred cat but simply what we call any mixed breed, shorthair feline. Once you see pictures of American Shorthair cats, you will easily notice that they have a very distinct face, and if you are lucky enough to meet one, you will see that they are bred as much for temperament as for the way they look.
The American Shorthair is a stocky, medium-large sized cat with males weighing 11-15 lbs, females just a bit smaller. Their body style is symmetrical and well balanced, giving us a strong, powerful and agile cat. Remember, they are working cats, and their appearance should reflect this. American Shorthairs have a large head, almost square. They have full cheeks, large, open eyes, and slightly rounded ears. Their coat is short, thick, and course, designed to protect the American Shorthair from weather. They are bred in more than 80 color patterns, with the black on silver (classic silver) tabby being the most popular.
This breed is also a perfect balance in temperament. They are loving and playful, gentle, friendly, and quiet. They make a perfect family companion, accepting both children and other animals. They might just try to assume your role as your child’s guardian and best friend. American Shorthairs are an unimposing breed. They don’t demand your attention, and they aren’t always in your lap. American Shorthairs are intelligent cats that have a dog-like personality. They learn to come when called, they like to play fetch, and they can easily be taught to stay off countertops and tables.
Being bred as a working cat, the American Shorthair is a healthy breed, often being referred to as robust and hardy. Their strong appearance is not deceiving! This is a long-lived breed, and you can look forward to them being a part of your family for nearly 20 years or more. Be careful of overfeeding your American Shorthair, as their only known health problem is a tendency to become overweight.
