Learn more about the Abyssinian, affectionately called the Aby, an ancient and wild-looking cat that places 5th on the most popular breed of cat list.

Abyssinian History

No one knows for sure where the Aby originated, but there are drawings on pyramid walls that highly resemble the Abyssinian. Some believe they came from Egypt, while others believe them to have come from the wild cats of Africa. A museum in Holland also houses some examples of preserved cats resembling the Aby that came from India. The Cat Fancier’s Association says that one of the first Abyssinian cat show winners was “captured in the late Abyssinian war,” which is where they got their name.

Abyssinian Characteristics

Wherever they originated, they have certainly made their mark with cat fanciers! The Aby is a beautiful, wild, and exotic looking creature with large, wide set ears and big, almond shaped, expressive eyes. Their ticked coat adds to their wild appearance and seems to make them shine. They are the picture of elegance and grace.

Abyssinian Temperament

If their sheer beauty doesn’t win your heart, their personality certainly will. They are said to possibly be the most intelligent and loyal breed of cat. They love to be where you are, though they are not lap cats. Abys are very active and playful and remain so into their later years. They like to climb high on top of things, and they have a fondness for playing in water. The Aby will certainly keep you entertained, and they are not for people who prefer a big, lazy, lap cat.

Abyssinians as Companions

Abyssinians are a good family cat and companion. They like children and other animals, and they do seem to prefer the company of other kitties. They are an expressive breed and talk with both their voice and body language. They like to communicate but aren’t a noisy breed in general. Everyone who is owned by an Aby says that they know they will never feel lonely, and they will always have someone who understands them.

Abyssinian Health

Abys are a healthy and long-lived breed of cat. Many live into their early 20’s! Some say the breed is prone to a kidney disorder called Renal Amyloidosis, though others argue that it isn’t a breed specific illness. The most common problem with Abyssinians is gingivitis, but this can be avoided altogether by keeping your Aby on a nutritional diet, keeping your cat’s teeth brushed, and getting annual dental checks.
